To the left of the Kotel plaza are the Western Wall tunnels which run the entire length of the Western Wall underground (most people think that what you see at the Kotel is what you get, but we know better!!!!) The exposed Kotel is but a fraction of the actual size of the wall,1600 feet length, and does not convey the grandeur of the Temple.
The tunnels opened to the public in the 1980's following a decade of digging that commenced following the Six-Day-War. They include a Temple model presentation; Second Temple period entrance gates, a bridge, street and public rooms;bedrock of Mt. Moriah; and two quarried stones weighing 407 and 570 tons.
For appointments call the Western Wall Heritage Foundation at 02- 627-1333. Group admission is 20 shekels adults,10 children, students, seniors.Tours with private guides and with the foundation will have an additional cost. You can learn more about the tunnels at the website www.thekotel.org .
